Almond Eye

The eye set in the surrounding tissue is of almond shape.

Bad Mouth

Crooked or unaligned teeth; bite over or undershot in excess of the standards.

Blaze

A white stripe running up the centre of the face usually between the eyes.

Blocky

Square or cube like formation of the head or body.

Blue Merle

Blue color dilute of black due to recessives. Blue and Grey mixed with black; marbled.

Brindle

 Striped coat effect caused by mixture of black hairs on light coloured base.  This color is a disqualification for the breed.

Section from hipbones to tail set.

Cryptorchid

The adult whose testicles are abnormally retained in the abdominal cavity.  Bilateral cryptorchidism involves both sides; that is, neither testicle had descended into the scrotum.  Unilateral cryptorchidism involves one side only, That is one testicle is retained or hidden and on descended.  See Monorchid.

Dudley Nose

A flesh-coloured nose

Feathering

Longer fringe of hair on the ears, legs, tail or body.

Gay tail

Carried above the back line.

Overshot

The front teeth of the upper jaw overlap and do not touch the front teeth of the lower jaw when the mouth is closed.

Oversize

Above the allowed height limit of 16 inches for the show ring.

Prick ears

Ears carried erect and pointed at the tip.

Ring Tail

Carried up and around almost in a circle.

Roman Nose

Nasal top line that forms a convex line; ram’s nose.

Ruff

Thick, longer hair growth around the neck.

Sabre Tail

Carried in a semi circle

Sable

A lacing of black hairs over a lighter ground color.  A brown color ranging from golden to mahogany.

Soundness

Free from flaws or defects, firm and strong.

Snipey

A pointed weak muzzle

Straight Shoulders

The shoulder blades rather straight up and down, as opposed to sloping or “well-laid back”.

Stop

The step up from the muzzle to skull; indentation between the eyes where the nasal bone and skull meet.

Throatiness

An excess of loose skin under the throat.

Ticked

Small, isolated areas of black or coloured hairs on a white background.

Tricolour

Three distinct color, usually black, white and tan markings.  The latter are usually found over the eyes, on the cheeks, inside the ears, on the chest and under the vent.

Top Line

The dog’s outline from just behind the withers to the tail set.

Undershot

The front teeth (incisors) of the lower jaw overlapping or projecting beyond the front teeth of the upper jaw when the mouth is closed.

Undersize

The height below the allowed limit of 13 inches for showing.

Vent

The anal opening.

Weedy

An insufficient amount of bone; light-boned.

Well Let Down

Having hocks close to the ground.

Wry Mouth

Lower jaw does not line up with the upper jaw.
